The TSA said in a tweet Thursday that it screened roughly 2.3 million travelers at US airports on Wednesday. That is about 88 percent of the traffic recorded on the day before Thanksgiving in 2019. The airports were similarly packed on Tuesday, with more than 2.2 million passengers taking to the skies.

TSA chief David Pekoske said the agency’s focus is to ensure all travelers are safe amid the surge in plane ridership. “We’ve looked at passenger volume projections, we’re ready for the Thanksgiving holiday,” he said. That figure is equal to about 91 percent of the traffic recorded on the corresponding day in 2019.

Attorney General Merrick Garland is directing federal prosecutors to prioritize cases involving unruly airline passengers. He says violent conduct that’s become common among air travelers endangers everyone aboard a flight. “Our goal is to make it as safe and secure and as enjoyable for people as we possibly can,” he says.
